Keep customers browsing and staff comfortable, from the shop floor to the stockroom.
Shop windows act like greenhouses in summer, and display lighting adds heat all day. In winter, an open door lets the heat straight out.
Hot shops lose browsers. Cold shops lose staff to portable heaters that cost a fortune to run. Some stock, such as chocolate, cosmetics and candles, does not like heat either.
HSE guidance says workplaces should normally be at least 16°C (13°C for strenuous work). There is no legal maximum, but employers must keep the temperature "reasonable" and assess heat as a risk.
Landlord and planning. Many retail units are leased, and outdoor units often need landlord consent. Planning permission may be needed for outdoor units, especially in conservation areas. We check this before quoting.Compliance. Buildings with more than 12kW of air conditioning in total need a TM44 energy inspection at least every five years. Systems above the F-Gas thresholds also need regular leak checks with records kept.
