GP Surgery & NHS Air Conditioning

Comfortable consulting rooms, cool treatment and vaccine rooms, and systems maintained with healthcare guidance in mind.

Busy waiting rooms, hot consulting rooms

Many GP surgeries are in converted houses or older health centres. Consulting rooms with closed doors for privacy, computers and small windows get hot, and waiting rooms fill up fast.

Treatment rooms hold medicines and vaccine fridges, which do not work well in a hot room.

HTM 03-01 and HBN 11-01

HTM 03-01 (Specialised ventilation in healthcare premises) is written for acute hospitals. For GP practices and health centres, it says the practice should carry out a risk assessment to decide how much of it applies. Part B covers how existing systems are maintained.HBN 11-01 covers primary and community care buildings. It supports natural ventilation in consulting rooms where it does not compromise infection control, privacy or comfort, and treatment rooms with mechanical ventilation.

In practice: avoid units with water reservoirs, keep recirculating units clean on a schedule, keep records, and do not let AC replace required fresh-air ventilation.

Primary care systems

See also dental and healthcare air conditioning. Buildings with more than 12kW of air conditioning in total need a TM44 energy inspection at least every five years. Systems above the F-Gas thresholds also need regular leak checks with records kept. We will tell you what applies.
