Help residents stay safe in hot weather with a reliable cool room and quiet, well-maintained systems.
UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) guidance says high-risk groups can find it hard to cool themselves once temperatures go above 26°C. Many residents take medicines that raise their risk of heat-related illness.
Older care home buildings, conservatories and top-floor rooms can overheat quickly, and staff working in PPE feel it too.
UKHSA hot weather guidance for social care managers says care homes should have a cool room or area that can be kept below 26°C, and should check and record indoor temperatures during hot spells. Air conditioning is listed as an option where shading and ventilation are not enough.
It also advises against pointing fans at people and warns fans can spread germs, so a well-maintained fixed system is often a better choice for a cool lounge.
CQC expects premises and equipment to be suitable and properly maintained, so keep service records to hand.
